Overview

The mission of Project Turnaround is to provide prevention services to adolescents who are at risk for substance abuse and participate in other risky behaviors. With the addition of PETEY (Prevention Education To Every Youth) the Turtle, the program promotes active participation to enhance factors that protect and bolster the resiliency of vulnerable youth. Project Turnaround continues to serve the Coastal Bend community after 13 years of dedication to local youth prevention efforts. Each grant year, Project Turnaround educates over 15,000 children and families in the community on various substance abuse issues through education curriculum, prevention presentations, and community events.

Prevention Presentations

The program staff of Project Turnaround is also available for single presentation and public speaking engagements. Each prevention presentation focuses on: increasing awareness and knowledge of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; their use, abuse, and addiction; and their harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities.

Community Events

Through collaborative efforts with schools and community members, Project Turnaround provides various events throughout the year that serve to increase community involvement, commitment, and the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by youth. Alternative activities promote a sense of belonging with peers, family, and community.

Education Curriculum

The program staff of Project Turnaround currently administers Strengthening Families; targeting youth ages 10-14 at Molina Neighborhood Center among other sites in Aransas, Nueces, and San Patricio counties. Too Good for Drug K-8 and Too Good for Drugs & Violence HS curriculums is implemented in over 20 schools around the Coastal Bend; including Alice MS/HS, Cunningham MS, Driscoll MS, Baker MS, and Taft JH & HS among other sites in Aransas, Brooks, Jim Wells, Live Oak, Nueces and San Patricio counties.

Too Good For Drugs

Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) is implemented through classroom sessions, ranging from 45 to 60 minutes, once a week for 10 weeks or twice a week for 5 weeks. Topics discussed with youth in grades K thru 12th include the following: decision making, goal setting, self-esteem, and drug awareness.

Strengthening Families

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is an evidence-based prevention program implemented once a week for 14 weeks in two hour sessions for parents and children ages 3-5, 6-11 and 12-16 in high risk families and focuses primarily on children ages 10-14 years. Parents meet separately for an hour to learn about clear communication, effective discipline, substance use, problem solving, and limit setting. Children meet separately for an hour, to learn how to understand feelings, control their anger, resist peer pressure, comply with parental rules, solve problems, and communicate effectively. During the second hour of the session, families engage in structured family activities, practice therapeutic child play, conduct family meetings, learn communication skills, practice effective discipline, reinforce positive behaviors in each other, and plan family activities.
