Project Turnaround

    A Youth Prevention Program Incorporating Education on Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs Funded by Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS)


Project Turnaround Overview

    The mission of Project Turnaround is to provide prevention services to adolescents who are at risk for substance abuse and participate in other risky behaviors. The program promotes active participation to enhance factors that protect and bolster the resilience of vulnerable youth.

    Project Turnaround continues to serve the Coastal Bend community after 10 years of dedication to local youth prevention efforts. Each grant year, Project Turnaround educates over 15,000 children and families in the community on various substance abuse issues through education curriculum, prevention presentations, and community events.


Goals

• To prevent the onset and/or interrupt the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs

• To increase resiliency skills as a result of participation

• To enhance leadership skills through specific activities

• To reduce risk factors


Community Events

    Prevention Drive Events are held throughout the year in the communities served to increase community involvement, commitment and prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by our young teens. The Challenge Event held in August of every year and Breaking the Norm held during Spring Break are some yearly community events held by Project Turnaround.


Project Turnaround Services

• Too Good For Drugs and Violence curriculum is implemented in one hour sessions 2 times a week for 10 days. Each lesson’s focus is to increase positive social behavior among attending student, while increasing awareness of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Topics discussed with youth in grades 3rd thru 12th include the following: decision making, goal setting, self-esteem, and drug awareness. Strengthening Families curriculum is implemented once a week for 7 weeks.

• Alternative activities that promote a sense of belonging to peers, family and community. Alternative activities serve to increase community involvement, commitment, and the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by youth.

• Referral services for faculty, students, and parents.

• Distribution of valuable information at schools and community events.

• Single presentation and public speaking engagements focusing on: increasing awareness and knowledge of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs; their use, abuse, and addiction; and their harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities.


Staff

Project Turnaround is under the direction of the Board and Management of the Coastal Bend AIDS Foundation. The program staff is trained in all areas required by the Texas Department of Health Service and has demonstrated proven experience in the prevention field.
